Celebrate Breastfeeding Awareness Month with Philips Avent Gear + #Giveaway @Avent_US

Disclosure: My friend Laura received the following for review. All opinions are her own.

When I had my son 4 years ago, I had every intention to breastfeed, but my son’s severe acid reflux and poor latch, combined with my pain (from the poor latch) and frustration – he would literally scream when I tried to put him on my breast – led me to exclusively pump for him. In conjunction with formula, I pumped for an entire year, retiring the breast pump on his 1st birthday!

This time around, I was more determined to breastfeed my now 1-month old daughter. She took to the breast almost immediately after birth, and has been latching and eating like a champ! I do, however, still pump for various reasons: to give the hubby opportunities to bond through feedings (especially in the wee hours of the morning), to give relief to my engorged breasts when DD isn’t interested in eating, and to build a stock-pile just in case.

When the opportunity came up to try Philips Avent Comfort Double Electric Breast Pump, I was curious to see exactly how comfortable it was since breastfeeding and pumping aren’t always the most comfortable things to do. Just FYI, I had used Medela Pump In Style Advanced Breast Pump with DS, and I started with the Spectra S2 (hospital grade) breast pump with DD.

Before DD was born, I attended an event with the “BabyGuy” and he was talking about open vs closed system breast pumps. I didn’t even know the difference before that day, but quickly came to the conclusion that, from that moment on, I would (and I’d highly encourage everyone) only use the more hygienic, closed systems. Philips Avent Comfort Double Electric Breast Pump falls in that category.

The system comes with everything you need to pump, store breastmilk, feed your baby, and carry or travel with your pump. Included in box is a compact and discreet travel bag, the pump and its various parts, two 4-oz. bottles, and a few breast pad samples.

I loved the visual instructions that came on the box. I’m quite bleary-eyed these days, so the graphic made the initial set-up easy and quick! I also appreciated the grips on the larger valve pieces, so you don’t have to worry about tearing or little pieces disappearing down the sink drain. The pump parts are super easy to clean too!

The actual pumping experience was relatively comfortable and efficient. The flanges have a silicone “petal cushion” insert, which I found to be quite gentle and comfortable, and the pump has 4 buttons for expression: 1 button for initial stimulation, and 3 buttons for different levels of suction.

The only real downside is that the pump was a bit noisier than the other two pumps I’ve used, but if you leave the pump in the carrying bag the sound is more muffled.
All in all, the comfort, compactness, and ease of use still makes this pump a winner my book! I think the Avent Comfort Double Electric Breast Pump is best suited for mothers who work outside the home and need a hygienic, comfortable, efficient, and portable pump.
