Super Duper Publications | Granny's Candies + #Giveaway

Disclosure: My cousin received Granny's Candies for review from Super Duper Publications. All opinions are her own.

My daughter is a board game fanatic. She has a whole closet full of different board games. She still loves getting more new games, and I am happy when I am able to find one which has educational value while at the same time entertaining. She was thrilled when Granny's Candies ($54.94) arrived. When we first opened the box, my six year old daughter was delighted to find an assortment of 144 colorful foam "candies" to play with. The game board has four "candy jars" where players put the candy tokens that they will be collecting during the game after they roll the foam die. The player who has collected the most candies at the end wins.

The game is made by Super Duper Publications and is designed for ages 5 and up. It came with an accompanying reproducible Lesson and Activity book to supplement for a classroom teacher's use. As a former elementary school teacher, I can see a value in using this game in conjunction with the reproducible worksheets, as a tool during small group time, or it would also be valuable for a language therapist. Granny's Candies comes with 672 semantic skill cards, with eight different categories to choose from. For example, there is one set of cards which works on How Are They Alike? and another is How Are They Different? which give you two items and you must explain the relationship, similarities or differences.

Another set of cards is called Which One Doesn't Belong? I liked this activity a lot because it gives you four items and only three fit into a category, so you have to explain why the fourth item doesn't belong. My daughter's favorite was What Is This Used For? where players must explain the function of a particular item. My daughter can be very soft spoken and shy sometimes so I felt like this activity would be helpful to her to strengthen her verbal skills.

With summer coming up, Granny's Candies will be a perfect tool to turn to on a day where we need something fun to do at home, while incorporating some learning at the same time. I am definitely going to use some of the activities I found in this book if I go back into classroom teaching again when my kids get older.
