Indian Chole {Recipe}

Indian food is always in my favs category.  I struggle with some recipes because they either don’t have exact measurements or because they are just too much work.  This chole recipe is simple, quick and easy which are key when working full time and taking care of a little one.  I took the time to standardize the method and measurements so that it is no longer “a pinch of this” and “a dash” of that for those of you who like to work off of real measurements.


  • 1 can of garbanzo beans
  • 1 medium sized boiled and mashed potato
  • 8 oz of tomato sauce
  • 1 large onion diced
  • 3-5 garlic cloves minced
  • Small piece of ginger minced
  • 1 serrano chili minced (optional depending on your preference of spicy)
  • Box of chole masala also known as chana masala poweder
  • Red chili powder
  • Turmeric
  • Dhana Jeeru (ground cumin)
  • Salt
  • Jeeru (cumin seeds)
  • Oil

  1. Take 5-6 large spoons of oil in a pot and heat on medium flame
  2. After 2 minutes put ½ tsp of jeeru in it and then add in the garlic and onions
  3. Sauté for 3-4 minutes and keep stirring so it doesn't burn
  4. Add in ginger and serrano chili and sauté everything for another 1-2 minutes
  5. Add 1/4tsp of turmeric, 1/2tsp of red chili powder and 1 tsp of dhana-jeeru
  6. Stir everything and add in tomato sauce; leave for 3 minutes, stirring occasionally
  7. Add in garbanzo beans and mashed boiled potato
  8. Add ¾ tsp salt
  9. Mix well
  10. Add ¾ cup of water and cook for 4-5 minutes
  11. Add ¾ tsp of chole masala
  12. Let it cook for 2 minutes and then it is ready.
  13. Garnish with cilantro leaves and serve
