King Arthur Flour: Maple-Glazed Bacon Donuts

Whilst many are suspicious at first, maple and bacon work incredibly well together and to really get into the sweet and sticky flavors which they combine to create, adding it all to a donut is the ultimate indulgence, and that is what we are going to share today.

This simple recipe can be used for breakfast or even a sweet treat in the mid-afternoon, truth be told this is a snack which can be eaten at any time during the day and will leave people hungry for more. This particular snack is decadent and delicious and is the ideal pick me up for a lazy Sunday morning, let’s take a look then at what ingredients are needed and how to create this tasty treat.

Ingredients

All these ingredients are easy to obtain in your local grocery store.

  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract or 1/2 teaspoon maple flavor(or to taste)
  • 2 2/3 cup Unbleached All-Purpose Flour (We use King Arthur)
  • 1 cup milk

We can see here that there are no crazy or hard to get ingredients here.

Additionally for the topping and the glaze, the following is required.

  • 6 slices bacon, cooked, cooled, and cut into squares
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1 cup confectioners’ sugar
  • pinch of salt
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup

Steps to Make The Donuts

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees, grease up two donut pans, or one and bake twice if you don’t have 2.
  • Beat the butter, vegetable oil and the sugars until it forms a smooth paste, once this consistency is achieved, beat eggs into the mixture.
  • Blend in the baking soda, salt, and flavoring, vanilla or maple.
  • Finally stir in the flour into this mixture, alternate with the milk, pouring a small amount in each time and mixing whilst doing so. The final result should be a smooth batter which is consistent and which doesn’t have any visible lumps.
  • In the donut wells, add a handful of bacon pieces and then drizzle the maple syrup over the bacon, around a teaspoon per donut will work.
  • Spoon the batter into the pan wells, making sure that the wells are full.
  • Bake donuts for 15 minutes, use the toothpick test to ensure  they are cooked, simply insert a toothpick into the center of a donut, it should come out clean.
  • Remove donuts from oven, take each donut out of the well and leave on a wire rack to cool.

To make the glaze simply stir together the sugar, the salt and the maple syrup, and then generously glaze over the cool donuts. As a final touch, sprinkle over the remaining pieces of bacon on to the wet glaze, adding aesthetic appeal and of course, getting some more of that tasty bacon onto the donut.

These donuts will last for a round a day at room temperature but if you wish to keep them for longer, putting them in the fridge is a better option, they can also be frozen for a later date.
