I am going to admit that I still have the last 5 or so pounds to shed since having Mason. I have not really changed my diet and only recently have gone back to the gym on the weekends. I needed a kick in the butt so I was excited to review the 3 day cleanse from Nekter Juice Bar. The bottles of juice arrived (hand delivered to my office!) in a large insulated tote bag and into my work fridge they went. I really didn't have too much of a clue regarding a cleanse beforehand but now that I've done it, I have the following advice for newbies who are hesitant about this process.

Although it is recommended to prepare your body for the cleanse, I didn't go anything out of the ordinary. I eat 3 full meals during the day as well as various snacks in between. I try to drink a lot of water but that is only to combat the amount of sugar I take in with cookies, cakes and ice cream. Hey, I have a maj sweet tooth! Don't fret if you just want to dive in like I did. My body did not go in some sort of odd shock. However, I do have to admit that my first bottle of #1 took a bit of coaxing to go down. I gladly awaited #2 because it was refreshing with my favorite coconut water as a base.

Make sure to have a stash of almonds and avocado on hand at the start of the cleanse, just in case. Don't feel that you need to hold out on any "food" when you are cleansing, especially if it is your first go around. Nekter Juice Bar recommends that you can snack on almonds as well as have half an avocado wrapped in lettuce if you are starving. I had a handful of almonds the first day as well as an entire avocado (sans lettuce) during lunchtime. I wasn't really hungry as I thought I would have been by just drinking the juices but in order to ward off any potential headaches or stomach grumbles, I went ahead and snacked. Hubs also carried home on a flight from NY some amazing Baked by Melissa cupcakes and at 10 pm on my 1st night of cleanse, I ate 5. In my defense, they were mini and I technically survived day 1 :)

If the taste of the juice becomes unbearable, just thinking about all the wonderful toxins leaving your body and swig it down. Afterwards, swig some water to get rid of the taste in your mouth or chew on some almonds. Yes this got me through bottles #3 and #5. My least favorites. I think perhaps the celery taste was overpowering for my taste buds that were missing sweets. Surprisingly, I didn't really have the urge to grab chocolate or quit altogether after day 1.

I have heard stories of people losing weight while cleansing only to have it come right back when eating solid food afterwards. Although I really wanted a kick start in my weight loss, I didn't really anticipate losing any weight. However, I was pleasantly surprised that I actually lost 1 lb! It has not come back even though I have been on my regular eating schedule since getting off the cleanse and I am happy to report that it is still off. Don't fret if you don't lose a lot of weight because there are internal benefits to the cleanse. It's just the motivation I need to change my eating habits a wee bit - no more bagels with massive amounts of cream cheese. I also feel less tired than before. I fell asleep on my normal 1 hour commute to work several weeks ago and rear-ended another car on the freeway. Let's just say the cleanse has given my body a boost in more ways than just the 1 lb loss.

If you don't make it or fall off after a day or so, don't fret. Just get right back into the cleanse if you can or wait another time. Keep yourself well hydrated and stay motivated not just for quick weight loss but for an overall healthier lifestyle. I enjoyed the cleanse and several coworkers as well as friends have asked my thoughts because they want to try it. I love eating and my sense of smell seemed heightened during the cleanse but I think I did pretty well. Not quite awesome but well for me because my usual daily diet is probably around 2,500 calories! I am a wee bit more health conscious as I don't shove the entire handmade ice cream cookie sandwich into my mouth but rather give my kiddos a bite each :) Slow change is A-OK! I can definitely see myself cleansing several times a year.
