Mason was born tongue tied so he had difficulty latching on since birth. I ended up giving him formula the hospital provided and continued to supplement when we arrived home. He ended up getting his tongue snipped but is still not fully opening his mouth and jabs at me with a closed or half open mouth to feed. His frustration makes me sad but I was happy to use the Lansinoh Affinity Pump to at least give him "liquid gold" through a bottle.
This breastpump was fairly simple to use. After affixing the shiels onto your breasts, turn on the unit which starts Phase I which is the let-down phase (you can bypass this but it automatically ends at 2 minutes). You then move onto Phase II which can be adjusted with the +/- button for suction strength. The levels vary from 1 to 8. I prefer a 4 or 5. You can also adjust the cycle from 1 to 6. At any point you can go back to the let down phase by hitting the button on the far right. This unit can be used while plugged into an outlet or it becomes portable by using 6AA batteries (not included) - very compact so it can easily be tossed into your bag.
A great feature is that this pump is a closed system. That means the milk cannot back up into the tubing and get into the motor. There is a flexible piece in the top of the bottle assembly that keeps milk where it belongs. I know many friends who have "borrowed" pumps and I always wondered how safe it was to just buy new parts but this unit is completely safe to pass along. A negative note is that this unit is loud - as in my coworkers could probably hear it outside the supplies room where I most likely will have to pump when I return to work. It also seems to be a bit weaker when running off of batteries. However, for the price this is a fantastic pump that will last.
I absolutely love the Lansinoh milk storage bags and nursing pads. The milk storage bags are leak proof and have a double zipper seal. They are pre-sterilized so just rip open and fill. I like the easily visible ounce markings and the area to keep track of when you pumped. These bags store easily in both fridge and freezer.
The Lansinoh nursing pads are my favorite. They come packaged individually and are ultrathin. I love that they have two adhesive strips so they stay in place. When I used them with Kenzie they would absorb so much that in the morning they were pretty heavy. However, with Mason I guess I don't produce as much but I still love these pads and ended up purchasing in bulk the other day when I saw them on sale at Target!
Lansinoh's HPA Lanolin was a lifesaver when I was pregnant and during the first month of attempting to feed Mason. It relieves sore cracked nipples and is even safe for baby to feed when you have it on. No need to wipe and clean. I used gobs of this and I have to note that it did stain my bras a little when I was pregnant.
Mason loves his mOmma bottles which really are just like mama. He did not have a "learning curve" on taking the mOmma. I am excited to try the feeding goodies we received by mOmma: non-spill cup with dual handle, soft spoon, soft fork and warm plate. So in approximately 4 months Mason will have the wonderful experience of eating all the yummy food I'm going to make him. He'll be able to practice his grip with the fun round ergonomic utensils as well as try a sippy. The bright colors and aesthetically pleasing design of mOmma in addition to Mason's quick adaptation to the product gives this company a two thumbs up.
