I grew up with classical music playing the piano and violin among other instruments. Therefore, I am glad Kenzie enjoys music as well. The Hape Early Melodies collection fosters such growth in musical fondness with quality "instruments" for children. We received the Pound and Tap Bench and it does not fail.
This is a wonderful toy that allows children to develop on so many levels. The child takes the hammer and pounds on the balls which fall through the hole and make "music" by bouncing down the xylophone. This allows the child to work on their fine motor skills by promoting hand/eye coordination as well as problem solving by understanding cause and effect.
I told Kenzie that she needed to pound hard to make sure the balls fell through the hole to hit the xylophone keys. She pounded away and made music! It does take some force to pound the balls through because there is a rubber lining inside each hole. When the ball drops, the sound is melodious as it cascades across the xylophone. Reload after all three pass and you are ready to go again!
The xylophone is removable and can be an independent toy. Just turn the hammer around and Kenzie was churning out some melodies of her own. The sound is clear and isn't tin-like. The "bench" is made of real wood so you know this is going to last. The age recommendation is 12 months+ and at 2.5 years old Kenzie will still enjoy this for some time...at least before Mason takes it over :)
The Hape Pound and Tap Bench has received awards such as the Creative Child Toy of the Year as well as the 2011 Parenting Magazine Best Toys of the Year. I am really impressed with the quality of this toy: the details as well as the sturdy sustainable eco-friendly materials.
Hape has a plethora of wonderful toys for your little one(s). I am sure Kenzie will have several on her wish list for Christmas (her birthday).
Buy It: You can purchase the Hape Pound and Tap Bench for $29.99.
